It was a fairly typical morning in the Sengoku Jidai. The sun had just peeked over the horizon, painting the sky in vivid pink and orange. Dew still clung to the leaves, and the air had a distinct chill. A young squirrel scampered through the trees with its companions, chattering excitedly as it hopped onto the lip of the old well that stood in the center of the forest.
The only warning of the danger that was to come was a little grunt from inside the well, and the squirrel dashed away just before a huge yellow backpack emerged from the dark and fell with an earth-shaking thump onto the grass. The peace of the morning was disturbed by one Kagome Higurashi, who now climbed out of the well and landed on the ground beside her bag, rubbing her eyes sleepily.
Standing up, she yawned and looked around. They'd had a few days rest after the events inside the Ogre Rock, and Kagome's feet had healed nicely thanks to a few ointments from her time. Granted, they weren't fully healed, and Inuyasha would probably have to carry her around for awhile if they wanted to actually get somewhere, but she felt she could make the leisurely walk from the Bone Eater's Well to the village with no problem.
She glanced around curiously. Where was Inuyasha, anyway? He'd spent some time at her house with her, but when she'd woken up this morning he was nowhere to be found and she had assumed that he had come ahead of her. There was no way she was lugging this heavy bag around without his help... "Mou..." Pouting, she reached down and grasped the strap, struggling to pull it onto her back. Finally, with a heave she got it off the ground and she staggered under its weight, almost falling to her knees. She took a moment to steady herself, then started off towards her friends.

The rustle of leaves surrounded him, their shadey blockage of the suns bright rays shifting and making his silver hair and ears warm. That same rustle came again, its culprit the breeze carrying along with it the wild scent of the forest's sakura and jasmine tree's, as well as the many flowers along its green floor. Keeping his eyes closed he shifted along the Goshinboku's rough bark, having to feel a sense of calm overtake his usually tense and ridgid form. An akward combination considering the recent events latley...
Again did the wind brush across his perch, making him give a slight frown in annoyance before it brought a distinct fragrance. Eyelids halfliddedly opened until the scent floated past once more, causing golding eyes to focus in on the dark greenery overhead.
'Kagome'.
Sitting up the hanyou perked his ears, intently listening to every sound when he suddenly heard the light crush of gravel. Footsteps. Leaping from his branch, he landed at the edge of the clearing, the dark, splintery wood of the old well that had the capabilities of time travel his focusing point. Soon his gaze went to a figure a few feet away, struggling with a huge (always overly stuffed) yellow back pack. Her dark hair swayed with each step she took, seemingly on the verge of tipping backwards...forwards...or to the side.
This time he gave a slight growl. Looking to her socks he saw the white bandages that had been there from the time she'd left. Again did the young woman sway, giving a sound of discomfort, making his ears perk up more. Jumping to her side quickly he snatched the big bag and held her up right as well as lifted it so its heavy content wasn't soley on her shoulders. A slight scowl covered his features, his attention going to her face as he spoke out his annoyance.
"Oi, what the hell do you think you're doin'?"

Kagome looked startled as the weight suddenly disappeared from her back. Looking up, she smiled at Inuyasha. "Good morning! I woke up and you were gone. Why didn't you wait for me?"

Keeping that slight scowl he observed the young woman as if she were crazy for even considering this to be a 'good' morning. "Your feet ain't gonna get any better if you keep walkin' around with loads of bricks in that damn thing ya know." He said matter of factly while darting his golden gaze to the bright backpack. Not answering her deliberatley, the hanyou gave a keh.

"A lot of this is your ramen, you know," Kagome grinned. "You want I should leave it all behind?" She really did feel so much better, and no obnoxious hanyou was going to get her down today. "My feet barely hurt at all now! I feel great!"

"Keh! That's why you were tipping? Nice try woman but I ain't that stupid." Tugging the bag from her shoulders to the ground in a thump he opened the top with a bit of excitment. She'd gotten new food...New food was always good. Rummaging through he bend down and took out cup of the dried noodles and gave a sniff. "Oi, did you get new stuff this time...?" He questioned unconciousley while pulling out another new one, its bright color and pattern much different from the times before.

Frowning, Kagome took the ramen from his hand and placed it back in the bag. "Yes I did, but don't open it here! It was hard enough fitting everything in!" Closing the bag again, she tried to pull it back onto her shoulders but squeaked as she lost her balance and began falling.

Scowling as she just tore the cup from his hand, the hanyou started to growl out a 'hey' when her form suddenly started swaying...yet again. Standing quickly he snatched the heavy pack from her shoulder and tugged her sleeve to balance her upright again. His scowl hadn't gone away, if anything else increased. "Wha'd I just say! At this rate you won't have a fucking foot left, now gimme that!" He spat out while tossing it over his own shoulder.

Kagome's mouth opened and closed like a fish, before she finally shrugged. "I could have carried that..." What had been so heavy to her Inuyasha was now balancing on one shoulder. Then again, she'd seen him carry a boulder as big as him, and uproot an entire tree and throw it into Royoukan's mouth... His strength was kind of scary. Reaching down, she grabbed his hand, tugging him in the direction of the village. "Let's go, Inuyasha."

Her voice rang in his head. 'Could'a carried it my ass...' he said inwardly to himself before being tugged along. "Keh." What he wanted at the moment was a nice hot cup of ramen...'Beef.' He made up his mind, the very THOUGHT of the scent making his mouth water. With that, a rumbled sounded in his stomach, his ears twitching when realizing it had come from him.

They walked along at a leisurely pace. It was getting lighter out now, and much warmer too. Kagome and Inuyasha still walked hand in hand, something that had become almost a habit of late. It just felt so natural. "Ne, Inuyasha?" Kagome asked softly, glancing up at him. "...I was worried when you'd left. Where did you go?"

Trying to keep his eyes on the trail ahead, the hanyou found himself to fail when his fingers tightened their grip if only slightly. Golden eyes turned to her, the soft voice she'd spoken to him in making him feel...well, guilty. "Ano..." Dropping them to the trail he paused then started. "I needed to think." Which was the truth...

Kagome looked slightly hurt at his response. "You can't think when you're with me?" Had he gone to see Kikyo? He wouldn't lie to her... right? This good mood of hers was quickly deteriorating.
The truth was, the moment he had left, she'd woken up. So used to Inuyasha hovering around as she slept, she found she just couldn't sleep when he was gone. When she had fallen back into a doze, she'd been plagued by nightmares. That's when she'd decided to go back earlier than usual and find him. Even if he was annoying, somehow... he always made things better. And the beautiful morning had cheered her spirits up immensely.

"Eh.." he started while shaking his head. "It isin't that Kagome..." It wasn't that he COULDN'T while being around her...It's that he chose not to. He'd come to terms with the fact that he needed to learn more...Had threatened his friends, her...when being in such a state. When he'd used that shard, let his youkai side break through. "When I'm near you, I..." Clenching his teeth he didn't know how to put it. He felt an overwhelming sense of guilt. He'd hurt her. Unable to finish he let his golden eyes go to her, an almost sorrow feeling them. Glancing to her feet he said it agian. "I'm sorry."

His words, however awkwardly said, touched her heart, and she smiled up at him, squeezing his hand gently. "My feet are healing really well, Inuyasha. And you didn't do anything. I'm the one that ran to you, remember? That was my choice, and I don't regret it." How could she? What he'd said that day... His words were, 'Just hold me a little longer', but she had heard what he'd truly meant to say, and she'd treasure that memory forever. Moments like that with Inuyasha were few and far between.
